The Alvin Community College Softball and Baseball teams will soon take to the diamond to kick off their Spring 2022 seasons.

The Baseball team looks to continue their success from 2021 by building a better start to their season while the Softball team has the talent and the determination to advance in the rankings of the NJCAA Region 14.

The Lady Dolphins begin their season on Friday, January 28 at 1 p.m. at the Coastal Bend Tournament in Beeville. Their first home game will be against Louisiana State University-Eunice on February 2 at 2 p.m. at Ruth Ryan Field.

The Baseball squad will open its season on Saturday, January 29 against Midland College in San Antonio. They will play their first home game against Navarro College on February 5 at 3 p.m.

Softball head coach Jerri Torres-Farmer said the 2021 season was plagued with injuries and she feels this season will be an opportunity to fulfill the team’s potential.

“We need to all be healthy this year,” Torres-Farmer said. “I have some really good athletes and we have good team chemistry.  Everyone is working hard to have a successful season.”

There are five sophomores returning to the 2022 squad who will provide much-needed leadership, she said.

“We can hit, we can field and we can pitch,” Torres-Farmer said. “As the season progresses we have to do what any team has to do, just keep getting better, stay consistent and eliminate mental errors.”

While she has a talented group of women playing the field, Torres-Farmer said she also feels assistant coach Alissa Rios and pitching coach Ken Delcambre will be vital to their success.

“We have a dynamic coaching staff this year that is already making a difference with the athletes on and off the field,” Torres-Farmer said. “There is a real excitement amongst the team at every practice and I believe it will be beneficial to our season.”

The Baseball team is coming off its 2021 campaign where it finished the second half of conference play with a 13-5 record. Head coach Jason Schreiber said his team will need to a strong opening for a successful season.

“I think the biggest improvements needed for a better season in 2022 is to get off to a better start,” he said. “We need to stay healthy and start the first half of conference the way we finished last year.”

There are three returning players from last year’s squad including Martin Vasquez, Matt Brimacombe, and Bryce Hughes. 

“All three players are better players than they were last year, and we are expecting them to have a big impact,” Schreiber said. “On the mound we are returning two left handers who had good season's last year, Jo Jo Villarreal and Oscar Cuello, we are expecting big things from both in 2022.”

The team’s strengths this season will be a strong, productive offense and depth with its pitching, he said.

“As the season progresses, we will need to continue to work on consistency repeating pitches and putting quality at bats together,” Schreiber said. “This group is the most talented we have had, we are not as experienced as we have been in the past, there will be a learning curve, but I do think this group will learn fast.”
